All mobile plant operators must be both trained and authorised. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, simply holding a training certificate is no longer enough.
Workers can’t be expected to recall everything from a single training session. And just because someone performed a task correctly on assessment day doesn’t guarantee they’ll do it correctly tomorrow.
As part of a legally required "Safe System of Work", businesses must go further than basic training - they are responsible for implementing clear procedures and rules for high-risk tasks, ensuring job-specific training is provided, and maintaining appropriate supervision and authorisation.
Company policies and procedures make supervision more effective by giving managers a clear reference point for what is expected of workers.
In addition to a policy, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or Safe Work Practices (SWPs) provide practical, task-specific instructions for safely performing high-risk activities. These might include steps for inspecting, maintaining, attaching, and using a particular forklift attachment safely and consistently.
