FAQs

My worker already has a drivers licence F endorsement, is that enough?

No. Endorsements are only required when driving on a public road is necessary.

In any case, F, W, T & R endorsements are being phased out. Here is a link to further information about that.

Until the amendment is passed, you will need to hold an F endorsement on your driver licence if you are required to drive your forklift on a public road.

What is a public road?

The explanation is not a simple one. It can be found here at this NZ Transport Agency website link.

VerifyME.kiwi recommend you do not allow anyone to take a forklift out the gate or off site on to the actual road or street unless;

  • The forklift has a current registration plate and current licence label and warrant of fitness.

  • The driver has an F endorsement on their licence.

What is an authorisation?

Mobile plant operators should be authorised to carry out tasks with heavy equipment.

Just driving around the site may be regarded as “high risk” because of the chance of running into pedestrians, structures and other vehicles.

A licence endorsement, training certificate or VOC is not an authorisation to operate a forklift on site. The code of practice requires employers to issue a separate authorisation to carry out specific tasks with specified machinery.

Our FREE SOP template has a built in authorisation panel.

How often do I need to complete a refresher?

The code of practice allows a maximum period of three years. VerifyME.kiwi recommends retraining every 2 years or annually. Most companies choose a 3 year cycle.

Note: Refresher training should be given at regular intervals OR when an operator has been involved in an accident OR when an operator has been observed operating incorrectly.

If my worker is required to operate a 12 tonne forklift, but has completed practical training on a 1.8 tonne machine, are they allowed to operate the larger machine?

Only when the PCBU or employer is satisfied that the operator has been properly trained in the safe use of specific equipment, may they authorise that worker to do that work.

Additional job specific training may be required. See authorisation above.
