Getting on an electric bike for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or haven't ridden in years, the added boost of an e-bike takes some getting used to. But don’t worry - once you’ve had a little practice and feel confident handling the bike, the experience becomes incredibly enjoyable. While having fun is a big part of the ride, staying safe is just as important. With a few simple safety habits, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a confident and responsible e-bike rider. Basic E-Bike Safety - Course Content

1. Introduction to E-Bikes

  • Types of E-Bikes (Class 1, 2, 3)

  • Key components (motor, battery, pedal-assist, throttle)

  • Benefits and unique risks vs. traditional bikes

2. Safety Gear & Preparation

  • Helmet (required and recommended standards)

  • Gloves, reflective clothing, eye protection

  • Charging and battery safety (fire risk, storage tips)

  • Pre-ride inspection checklist:

    • Tire pressure

    • Brakes

    • Battery level

    • Lights & reflectors

3. Rules of the Road

  • Local E-Bike laws (speed limits, bike lane access)

  • Sidewalk rules and pedestrian awareness

  • Signaling and lane positioning

  • Right-of-way rules and intersections

4. Riding Skills

  • Mounting and dismounting

  • Controlled starts and stops

  • Turning techniques

  • Riding in traffic vs. bike paths

  • Riding with a load or passengers

5. E-Bike Specific Hazards

  • Speed awareness and braking distance

  • Motor cut-off during emergency stops

  • Battery care and charging safely

  • Adapting to different terrain and weather

6. Maintenance Basics

  • Battery care and lifespan

  • Brake and tire checks

  • Chain and drivetrain upkeep

7. Emergency Situations

  • Handling a fall or crash

  • Dealing with battery overheating or fire

  • What to do if you’re stranded

8. Final Review & Practice

  • Quiz or knowledge check

  • Practical riding session
